History

Escalona is at the very heart of Spanish history. The town has been like an elevated sentinel observing the rich history that has passed by the waters of the Alberche over the centuries. Each of the centuries have left their mark on Escalona not only for the deeds of the inhabitants but also in the development of the town itself and its surrounding villages. Without doubt the castle is the dominant feature of the town together with the extensive fortifications. The walls date back to the 12th and 13th centuries and  used to surround the town. About 1 km of these walls still exist.
